The power steering pump is used to provide power steering fluid under pressure to the power steering box or the power steering rack and pinion.
It is normally located toward the front of the engine and it typically run off of the engine drive belt. It contains a set of retractable vanes that spin inside an oval chamber as the vanes spin, they pull hydraulic fluid from the return line at low pressure and force it into the outlet at high pressure. The amount of flow provided by the pump depends on the car's engine speed.
The pump contains a pressure-relief valve to make sure that the pressure does not get too high, especially at high engine speeds when so much fluid is being pumped.
Before you automatically assume the power steering pump is faulty because its making noise, make sure that the fluid is topped up in the pump reservoir, as a low PS fluid level is the leading cause of premature failure of a power steering pump. The other leading cause of poor performance by the PS pump is a loose drive belt. Always check the PS belt if you are having problems with the power steering in your car.
The common signs of a failing pump include....
1, A loud whining noise coming from the pump.
2, Chattering in the steering wheel as you turn a corner.
3, Complete loss of the power assisted steering.
4, Power steering fluid leaking from any part of the pump.
If the power steering pump does need to be replaced, make sure you completely flush the old PS fluid from the system as it may be contaminated with metal shavings. It is also common if the pump fails, that you will have to change the steering rack as well.
