Power rack and pinion steering assemblies are hydraulic/ mechanical
units with an integral piston and rack. An internal rotary valve directs
power steering fluid flow and controls pressure to reduce steering
effort. The rack and pinion is used to steer the car in the event of
power steering failure, or if the engine (which drives the pump) stalls.
When the steering wheel is turned, resistance is created by the weight
of the car and tyre-to-road friction, causing a torsion bar in the
rotary valve to deflect. This changes the position of the valve spool
and sleeve, thereby directing fluid under pressure to the proper end of
the power cylinder. The difference in pressure on either side of the
piston (which is attached to the rack) helps move the rack to reduce
turning effort. The fluid in the other end of the power cylinder is
forced to the control valve and back to the pump reservoir. When the
steering effort stops, the control valve is centered by the twisting
force of the torsion bar, pressure is equalized on both sides of the
piston, and the front wheels return to a straight ahead position.
If you find that your rack is leaking power steering fluid, it's time to
replace it. Before you install a new steering rack, be sure to flush out
the rest of your old power steering fluid. Your old steering fluid will
most likely have corrosive metal shavings in it.
The common signs that there is a problem with the power steering rack

The rubber steering rack gaiters or 'boots' on either end of the
steering rack become enlarged or are leaking fluid.
The steering becomes either excessively light or heavy.
Steering is lighter to turn on way.
Noise.
Steering will not self-centre.
All units for remanufacture are completely stripped down and subjected
to a thorough inspection of all the major components prior to the
reassembly process. Any components failing amk's strict quality
inspection are replaced with parts manufactured to Original Equipment
specifications.
Experienced engineers, using modern techniques and equipment, carry out
the reassembly of the unit which is then tested beyond normal operating
pressures, prior to the final visual inspection and packing.
