You turn the key, and instead of the engine firing up you get a sluggish groan, a rapid clicking, or nothing at all. Then the guessing starts. Is it the battery, or the alternator? It's one of the most commonly misread car problems, and getting it wrong is expensive. Plenty of drivers buy a shiny new battery, fit it, feel relieved for a week, then end up stranded again because the alternator was the real problem all along.

The two parts are easy to confuse because their symptoms overlap. But they do completely different jobs, and once you understand that, telling them apart gets a lot simpler. Here's how to work out which one is letting you down before you spend a penny on the wrong part.

What the battery and alternator actually do

Think of it as a two-part relationship. The battery's job is short: it provides the burst of power that turns the starter motor and gets the engine going. Once the engine is running, the battery more or less steps back.

That's when the alternator takes over. It's driven by the engine through the drive belt, and it does two things at once. It powers everything electrical while you drive (lights, wipers, heater, ignition) and it tops the battery back up so it's ready for the next start.

So the quick way to remember it: the battery gets you started, the alternator keeps you going. When something electrical goes wrong, the symptom usually points to whichever part was on duty at the time.

Signs the battery is the one failing

Battery trouble tends to show up at the moment you try to start the car. Watch for:

  • A slow, laboured crank. The engine turns over like it's wading through treacle before it catches, if it catches at all.

  • Rapid clicking when you turn the key. That's the starter motor trying to fire without enough power behind it.

  • It jump-starts easily and then runs fine. A battery that's simply flat or worn will usually spring back to life on jump leads and behave normally once it's going.

  • It keeps going flat overnight. If the car sat unused and won't start in the morning, or dies after a few days parked, the battery is struggling to hold charge.

  • Age. Most car batteries last around four to five years. If yours is older than that, it's a prime suspect, especially through a cold British winter, when the extra strain finds weak batteries quickly.

  • Visible clues under the bonnet. A swollen case, a rotten-egg smell, or crusty white and green corrosion on the terminals all point at the battery.

If several of these ring true and the car behaves itself once it's actually running, you're most likely looking at a battery.

Signs the alternator is the one failing

Alternator problems tend to appear while the engine is running, because that's when it's meant to be working. The tell-tale signs:

  • Dimming or flickering lights. Headlights that go dull at idle and brighten when you rev are a classic alternator symptom. The same goes for flickering dashboard lights or a stereo that cuts in and out.

  • The battery warning light on the dash. Confusingly, that little battery symbol is really a charging-system warning. When it glows while you're driving, it usually means the alternator has stopped charging properly.

  • A brand-new battery that dies anyway. This is the big one. If you've just fitted a fresh battery and it goes flat within days, the alternator almost certainly isn't recharging it.

  • It starts on a jump but dies as soon as you pull the leads off. Running on a bit of borrowed charge with no alternator to sustain it, the engine quits once that runs out.

  • Odd noises or smells. A worn alternator bearing can whine or grind, and a slipping belt can give off a hot-rubber smell.

  • Electrical gremlins. Power windows crawling, the heater blower losing puff, or the dash flickering as you drive all suggest the electrical supply isn't steady.

The pattern to notice: battery faults show up at start-up, alternator faults show up once you're moving.

The jump-start test you can do in five minutes

You don't need any tools for this one, just a set of jump leads and another car (or a jump pack).

Get the car started with the leads, then disconnect them and let it idle on its own.

  • If it keeps running happily, the alternator is doing its job and your battery was the weak link.

  • If the engine dies shortly after you remove the leads, the alternator isn't generating power, and that's your culprit.

It isn't a lab-grade diagnosis, but it's remarkably reliable for pointing you in the right direction on the roadside.

The multimeter test for a definite answer

If you want certainty, a cheap multimeter settles the argument. Set it to DC volts and connect it across the battery terminals, red to positive and black to negative.

With the engine off, a healthy battery reads somewhere around 12.4 to 12.7 volts. Much below 12.4 and the battery is low or on its way out.

Now start the engine and read again. With everything running, you should see roughly 13.7 to 14.7 volts. That extra voltage is the alternator charging the battery. If the number barely moves from its resting value, or actually drops, the alternator isn't charging. If it climbs above about 15 volts, the alternator is overcharging, which can cook a battery and causes just as much trouble as undercharging.

Two quick readings, and you'll know which part to point the finger at.


When it's neither: the culprits people miss

Before you replace anything, rule out the cheaper problems that can mimic a dead battery or alternator:

  • Loose or corroded terminals. A bad connection can starve the car of power even when the battery and alternator are both fine. Cleaning and tightening the terminals revives a surprising number of "dead" cars.

  • A poor earth connection. A corroded or loose earth strap causes all sorts of strange electrical behaviour.

  • A parasitic drain. Something like a boot light that never switches off, a faulty relay, or a badly fitted aftermarket gadget will quietly flatten a perfectly good battery overnight.

  • A worn or slipping drive belt. If the belt turning the alternator is loose, glazed or worn, the alternator can't spin fast enough to charge properly, even though the alternator itself is healthy.

A two-minute look under the bonnet is worth it before you buy parts.

Why getting the diagnosis right matters

A battery and an alternator are very different bills, so buying the wrong one already stings. But the bigger issue is the knock-on effect.

A failing alternator will flatten a brand-new battery in no time, so if you treat the symptom (the flat battery) without fixing the cause (the alternator), you'll be buying batteries on repeat. And an alternator that overcharges can gradually ruin a good battery from the other direction. Either way, the part you didn't check keeps costing you.

There's also the small matter of being stranded. Battery and charging faults are among the most common reasons for a breakdown call-out, and they love to strike on a cold morning when you're already running late. Five minutes with a multimeter at home beats an hour on the hard shoulder.

If the trouble happens when you're trying to start the car, suspect the battery. If it happens once the engine is running, so dimming lights, the dash warning glowing, or a new battery going flat, suspect the alternator. Modern cars lean on a steady charging system more heavily than older ones did, with more electronics drawing power the whole time the engine runs.
