A misfire is the classic sign. If one injector isn't delivering the right amount of fuel, that cylinder either burns weakly or doesn't fire at all. You feel it as a shudder at idle, a flat spot when you accelerate, or a vibration that comes and goes with no obvious pattern.

On a lot of modern cars the engine warning light will flash rather than glow steadily. That flashing is the ECU telling you the misfire is bad enough to risk damage. Persistent misfires foul the spark plugs and can wash the protective oil film off the cylinder walls, which speeds up engine wear. A leaking injector can also thin the engine oil with fuel over time. What begins as a minor stumble can, left alone for long enough, become a repair several times the cost of dealing with the injector while it was still an easy fix.

Not every faulty injector needs replacing, and it helps to match the fix to the severity.

For mild, intermittent symptoms, a decent fuel injector cleaner added to the tank can clear light deposits over a few fill-ups. It's cheap and worth trying first. For more stubborn clogging, a garage can remove the injectors and clean them ultrasonically, then test them on a bench for flow rate and spray pattern. That process rescues plenty of injectors that seemed dead.

Cleaning won't help, though, if the injector is leaking internally, physically worn or electrically failed. At that point replacement is the honest answer.
