That's the awkward thing about cam belts. They're cheap relative to what they protect, they're invisible during normal driving, and the MOT test in the UK doesn't check them. A car can sail through its MOT with a belt that's years overdue, and the owner walks away thinking everything's fine. It often isn't.

What a timing belt actually does

  • Lots of short, cold journeys. Stop-start town driving and frequent cold starts are harder on rubber than long steady runs, even though the mileage clocks up slowly.

  • Oil or coolant contamination. A leak from the cam seal, crank seal or a weeping water pump lets oil or coolant reach the belt, which softens and destroys it. If there's an oil leak near the timing cover, the belt is at risk.

  • A worn tensioner or idler pulley. These set the belt's tension and guide it. When they wear, the belt runs too loose or too tight and fails early, sometimes taking the belt with them when a bearing seizes.

  • Heavy loads and towing. Working the engine hard puts more strain through the belt.

None of these mean you replace the belt early for no reason. They mean that if any apply to you, the manufacturer's interval is the outer limit, not a target to stretch.


Warning signs worth catching early

You can't always spot a failing belt, and by the time symptoms appear you're often on borrowed time. Still, some signs are worth knowing:

  • A ticking or light rattling from the timing cover area, which can point to a failing tensioner or idler bearing.

  • A high-pitched squeal, sometimes from a belt that's glazed or slightly out of tension.

  • The engine feeling rough, misfiring or being harder than usual to start, which can follow a belt that's begun to slip a tooth.

  • Any oil weeping around the timing cover, since that oil doesn't belong there and the belt is sitting right behind it.

If you can see the belt during a service and it's cracked, glazed or showing frayed edges, it's done. But honestly, most people never see theirs, which is exactly why the interval exists in the first place.

Replace the kit, not just the belt

Here's where a bit of hard-won garage wisdom saves money. The tensioner, the idler pulleys and, on many engines, the water pump all wear on roughly the same clock as the belt. Fitting a fresh belt against tired pulleys is false economy, because if one of those bearings seizes a few months later, the belt gets destroyed and you pay for the whole job twice, plus any engine damage.

That's why the sensible approach is a full timing belt kit: belt, tensioner and idlers together, with the water pump done at the same time if the belt drives it. Most of the cost of the job is labour to get the front of the engine apart, so replacing the wear items while you're already in there is the cheap part. Doing it piecemeal is the expensive way to save money.

Wet belts: a modern wrinkle

One more thing worth knowing, because it trips up owners of newer cars. Some recent engines use a "wet" timing belt that runs inside the engine, bathed in oil, rather than a dry belt behind a cover. You'll find them on certain small turbo petrol engines that have become common in the UK.

The theory was that a belt in oil would be quieter and long-lived. In practice, several of these engines have a reputation for the belt breaking down, shedding material into the oil and clogging up the oil pickup, which then starves the engine of lubrication. The same goes for a car you already own with no clear history. If you don't know when it was last done, assume it hasn't been, and get it inspected or replaced. Paying for a belt you didn't strictly need is annoying. Paying for an engine because you gambled and lost is a lot worse.
