Brake Calipers are used in all disc braking systems, The role of the brake callipers is to apply the pressure needed for the brake pads to grip the metal brake disc which will slow or stop the car.
Brake calipers hydraulically operate the brake pads to create the friction in a disc brake system. They come in various shapes and sizes and with different numbers of pistons but all share the same function of transferring the hydraulic pressure generated by the master cylinder to a mechanical force applied to the brake pads. Calipers can corrode or rust over time or due to excessive braking and atmospheric conditions. Frequent on-off braking can also generate a lot of heat which will further reduce the lifespan of the brake callipers and other related parts. Old and worn brakes can seize up, which is highly dangerous on the road and a major reason for MOT failure.
